15 phrases with pronunciation

First hellos

สวัสดี works at any hour, which makes Thai one of the friendliest languages to start speaking on day one. The time-of-day versions exist, but locals mostly reach for the all-purpose hello.

  1. สวัสดี sawatdi Hello
  2. สวัสดีตอนเช้า sawatdi ton chao Good morning
  3. สวัสดีตอนเย็น sawatdi ton yen Good evening
  4. ยินดีที่ได้รู้จัก yindi thi dai ruchak Nice to meet you
  5. ยินดีต้อนรับ yindi tonrap Welcome

ครับ or ค่ะ?

Every greeting here turns polite with one syllable: men add ครับ (khráp), women add ค่ะ (khâ). สวัสดีครับ and สวัสดีค่ะ are the two sounds you'll hear most in Thailand.

How are you?

One question, one answer, and a warm extra — this tiny loop carries most Thai small talk.

  1. สบายดีไหม sabaidi mai How are you?
  2. สบายดี sabaai dii I'm fine
  3. ดีใจที่ได้เจอ dii chai thîi dâi choe Happy to see you

Thanks and sorry

Gratitude and apology are where the politeness particles really earn their keep — these four keep every interaction smooth.

  1. ขอบคุณ khopkhun Thank you
  2. ยินดี yindi You're welcome
  3. ขอโทษ khotthot Sorry

One word covers sorry, excuse me, and may-I-get-past.

  4. ขออภัย kho aphai My apologies

The heavier, formal apology — announcements and businesses use it.

Goodbyes and good nights

Thai partings range from see-you-soon warmth to almost-literary farewells. Pick by how long you'll be gone.

  1. เจอกันใหม่ choe kan mai See you again
  2. ลาก่อน la kon Goodbye
  3. ราตรีสวัสดิ์ ratri sawat Good night

Don't overuse ลาก่อน

ลาก่อน sounds final — like you won't meet again for a long while. For everyday partings Thais say เจอกันใหม่ (see you again).

Frequently asked questions

How do I greet someone politely in Thai?

Match the greeting to the situation: the list above runs from everyday hellos to time-specific and formal greetings. When in doubt, choose the more polite option — it is never rude to be too respectful.

How do I pronounce these Thai phrases?

Every phrase comes with romanization — the phrase spelled out in Latin letters. Read it out loud slowly, then work up to the rhythm of the full phrase. Native speakers care far more about confidence and context than perfect pronunciation.

What is the best way to memorize these phrases?

Little and often beats cramming. Review a handful of phrases a day, say them out loud, and revisit them tomorrow. The Pretalk app turns lists like this one into bite-size lessons with spaced review, so the phrases actually stick.
